[Slovakia] Amendment to the labor code from 1.8.2024 concerning juvenile employees


From August 1, 2024, there will be a change in the Labor Code regarding the work of juvenile employees. Young employees from 15 to 18 years of age will be able, after meeting certain conditions, to work for the employer even without the consent of the Inspectorate of Labor.

An employee who is under the age of 18 is called a juvenile employee. A person between the ages of 15 and 18 is considered a juvenile, it is the period of life between reaching the legal capacity for work (15 years) and reaching the age of adulthood (18 years).

According to the Labor Code, an employee is a natural person who performs dependent work for the employer according to his instructions for wages or remuneration.

From August 1, 2024, an amendment to the Labor Code comes into effect, based on which young people over the age of 15 can work for an employer without the consent of the labor inspectorate already after finishing school in the last year of compulsory schooling. This means that if the school term ends (ends on 30.6.) and the pupil has already turned 15 and has completed compulsory school attendance, he will be able to work during the summer months (July and August) and does not have to wait for the date 31.8., when the official end of the school year.

Since the amendment to the Labor Code is effective only from 1 August 2024, the date of starting work can also be agreed from 1 August 2024.
