[Poland] Coronavirus: additional childcare allowance extended again

The Council of Ministers issued a regulation extending the period of granting and receiving childcare allowances in connection with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic by another week. Regulations have entered into force on 27 April 2020.

Additional childcare allowance – extension until 3 May 2020

According to the new regulation, a parent looking after a child may apply for an additional childcare allowance also after 26 April 2020. The additional childcare allowance is granted to parents of children under 8 years of age and to parents of children under 16 years of age with a disability certificate and to parents of children under 18 years of age with a severe or moderate degree of disability, during the closure of nurseries, kindergartens, schools, children’s clubs and day care facilities, due to the inability of the nannies or day carers to provide childcare, for the duration of the COVID-19 epidemic, but not longer than 3 May 2020.

It is worth noting that the new regulations do not change the existing rules of taking advantage of the childcare allowance, which is paid for each day of care, and in order to receive the benefit, the employer or the principal should receive a parent’s declaration on taking care of his/her child. In the case of parents conducting business activity, the benefit is granted on the basis of declarations submitted to ZUS.

Note that this additional allowance is not included in the limit of 60 days of care allowance granted in a given calendar year under the so-called general rules.

The government will soon announce further decisions on the introduction of additional forms of childcare provided in nurseries and kindergartens after 4 May and a possible further extension of the additional childcare allowance.
